“The body of work loosely contained under the label of Afrofuturism exists within two radically distinct but conceptually overlapping timelines. The first encompasses the history of the United States but focuses its attention on slavery and its aftermath, traced all the way into the current century – the longue durée…”

WHERE I GO: AFROPALONIA

(Article by Rashaad Thomas on zocalopublicsquare.org. Illustration: beboggs)

Writer and Poet Rashaad Thomas Imagines ‘a Planet Only for Black People’

“Death sits next to me, hip bones touching mine on a twin bed in the center of a revolving room in Arizona that’s progressively increasing in speed. Frequency numbers, lifeless Black bodies, and protest signs spread across the ceiling, mixing with red, white, and blue pills and two inches of 40-ounce malt liquor poured out on the floor for my dead homies.”

Black Speculative Fiction Month matters because too often at cons and writing events, I’m the only nonwhite guest in attendance.”

For me, Black Speculative Fiction Month matters because it highlights how we honor our ancestors by imagining ourselves into a positive, thriving future of our own design. And it’s about damn time. Ase, and so it is…

‘Intergalactic Soul’ moves Afro-futurism into Historic West End

“Since its creation in 2014, Charlotte-based artists Marcus Kiser and Jason Woodberry’s Afro-futuristic exploration of contemporary cultural, political and social themes have appeared in creative spaces across the globe as well as Goodyear Arts, Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture, McColl Center for Arts + Innovation, and Duke Energy Theatre at Spirit Square.

It includes physical creations, spoken word and music with fellow creative Quentin Talley. Now a Knight Foundation grant allowed Kiser and Woodberry to create the first “Intergalactic Soul” murals off West Trade Street across from Johnson C. Smith University’s Arts Factory.”
