Fighting global poverty from space
(Article by TRT World on trtworld.com. Photo Credit: TRT World)
“Night satellites orbiting the Earth can be a new way to identify economic inequality. Despite the success in reducing global poverty over the last two decades, nearly one billion people continue to live without access to reliable electricity, which in turn impacts health and welfare and impedes sustainable development. Knowing where these people are is crucial if aid and infrastructure are to reach them. Now, a new IIASA-led study proposes a method to estimate global economic wellbeing: the use of nighttime satellite images….”

How tech and agriculture can help Africa’s pandemic recovery
(Article by Carlos Mureithi on qz.com. Photo credit: FUTUREPUMP)
“Agriculture is a pillar of Africa’s economy, with the continent heavily dependent on the sector. It contributes 23% of the continent’s GDP and 49% of employment in the continent. But the covid-19 pandemic has disrupted agricultural activity in the continent with considerable effect, as smallholder farmers, who contribute most of the food supply, face movement restrictions, reductions in people’s purchasing power, and other factors. The pandemic has strained Africa’s food systems and economies at large…”

Can Cloud-Based Technologies Help Address Food Insecurity In Africa?
“For us in the technology space, we are noticing some silver lining in application of technology to partly address the challenges [of food insecurity] above. Already, AI is beginning to transform agriculture in important ways. Many farmers have for instance started utilizing innovative technologies like self-driving tractors that use GPS, satellite imagery, and AI to plant more efficiently. Others are using sensors and machine learning to make decisions like when to irrigate and how much fertilizer to apply.”

Top African tech startups have solutions to some of the continent’s pressing challenges
“Africa’s top startups presented innovative proposals to tackle water, food and land security, healthcare, urban development and engineering challenges in Africa. The two-day summit… also included expert-led sessions looking at investment, food sustainability, smart cities and villages, drone testing, image analytics, aviation policy for sustainable growth and the role of women in the aerospace industry.”
We always knew Africans could solve their own problems, but now it’s evident. The image of starving Africans is being replaced with thriving African technology centers. African Americans have the capacity to do this as well. What is the blueprint for cultivating technology innovation and incubating technology startups in marginalized communities in America?

Science and technology parks as enablers for economic development in Africa
“The Innovation Hub – the Innovation Agency of the Gauteng Province will host the prestigious 2019 International Association of Science Parks (IASP) Africa Division Workshop, May 23 – 24, 2019, at The Innovation Hub, Tshwane, South Africa… To be hosted under the theme ‘The Role of Science and Technology Parks (STPs) and Areas of Innovation (AOIs) as enablers for economic development’, the main objective of the workshop will be to challenge practitioners from the continent to consider the economic development capacity of STPs and AoIs in Africa.”
It’s great that the economic development capacity of STPs and AOIs are being considered in African countries, and I’m certain many Africans will benefit economically from these types of efforts. Keep in mind, however, that as great as this appears, “economic development” has always been code for exploitation – in this case, Black genius being harvested by non-Black-owned tech companies that ultimately profit enormously from the innovations the centers produce. How can we create and support our own technology parks?

Can digital farming end famine in Africa?
“Digital farming… is a means of applying new technologies such as data science, advanced sensors in the field and from space, digital communication channels, and automation out on the field.”

Apparently, digital farming makes the overall farming process much more efficient, by enabling both large and small farmers to make more informed decisions about weather, soil conditions, and other factors that affect yield. Bravo! Now, how do we use this tech to end famine in Africa?
