Article by Tage Kene-Okafor on techcrunch.com. Photo credit: Talent City.

“After helping build two unicorns and starting a VC fund, Aboyeji wants to create charter cities in Africa. But what are the odds of it working? African cities, particularly sub-Saharan ones, have the fastest global urban growth rate. But with challenges around overcrowding, congestion, infrastructure, power and poor governance, these cities are maxed out in what they can provide to the average African living in urban environments…”

Smith and Goalsetter, a financial literacy platform founded by Tanya Van Court, announced today the launch of “One Stock. These Founders Are Building A Diverse Community For Sneakerheads Through Their Startup Tradeblock

(Article by Ngozi Nwanji on afrotech; Photo Credit: David Avila)

“There’s a difference between being for the culture and doing it for the culture and the three visionaries at Tradeblock — a sneaker trading app where kicks are currency — are committed to the latter for the sneaker community.

The Austin-based startup officially hit the ground running earlier this year in May, but the initial vision for Tradeblock was birthed in 2009 by co-founder Tony Malveaux. While inspired by ESPN’s Trade Machine, Malveaux connected with his longtime best friend and now fellow co-founder Darren Smith about his idea — but it was a dream deferred until bringing their fellow childhood friend Mbiyimoh Ghogomu — Tradeblock’s CEO — onboard and from that moment they’ve become trailblazers in the sneaker marketplace.”

The Trump administration countered Chinese investment in African tech. Will Biden continue?

“In January 2020, Nigerian healthcare startup LifeBank became the first company to receive investment under a new maternal care initiative introduced by the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). LifeBank’s 24/7 blood supply business met three criteria for a DFC-funded company; it is a revenue-generating enterprise filling a developmental gap in an emerging market. Using these investment criteria, the DFC has gone on to invest in multiple sectors across Africa. In addition to LifeBank, DFC’s Africa portfolio includes Twiga FoodsCopia (both Kenyan startups), and investments in Angola, Botswana, Chad, Egypt, Gabon, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda. The DFC has a $75 billion investment target for people in less developed economies, through loans and direct equity funding into startups, funding VC funds, and providing technical support.  That alone makes its presence in Africa remarkable. Startups working on power generation, healthcare, agriculture, technology, and financial services could access really large tickets for massive scale. But America is changing hands to an ideologically different leadership. How will this influence the DFC’s future approach and impact in Africa?”

African Women in Technology Conference 2019

“Speaking with representatives of various tech organizations from all over Africa, the conference presented a great opportunity for women to be better versions of themselves. Speaking at the event, Laura Chite the CEO CIO East Africa noted, “This is an opportunity to be a better version of oneself not just in the technology careers but holistically. It is worth seizing.””

Two things are true: The leadership of women is critical to our survival. And technology has the potential to solve many social and economic problems that are pervasive on the continent. Looking forward to seeing many more similar events both at home and abroad.

Why You Should Care That Nigeria Is In Silicon Valley

“To establish bilateral economic relationships between Silicon Valley, Nigeria and emerging countries in Africa, [the Silicon Valley – Nigerian Economic Development Inc.] identifies Silicon Valley Tech companies interested and able to hire Nigerian engineering, computer science and technology graduates utilizing H1-b Visa program… It introduces seasoned and emerging tech firms to Nigeria’s federal government to facilitate the creation of technology, manufacturing plants, and call centers to increase employment for Nigerian college graduates as skilled labor workforce.”

The future is technology and Nigeria knows it. And what better way to become competitive globally than to create relationships with tech companies in Silicon Valley. And, as the world’s 27th largest economy, Nigeria has a lot to offer. If the future is tech, where do we fit in?
