How tech and agriculture can help Africa’s pandemic recovery

(Article by Carlos Mureithi on qz.com. Photo credit: FUTUREPUMP)

“Agriculture is a pillar of Africa’s economy, with the continent heavily dependent on the sector. It contributes 23% of the continent’s GDP and 49% of employment in the continent. But the covid-19 pandemic has disrupted agricultural activity in the continent with considerable effect, as smallholder farmers, who contribute most of the food supply, face movement restrictions, reductions in people’s purchasing power, and other factors. “On a mission to inspire the future generation of Black kids in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Dr. Calvin Mackie is building an unshakable foundation down South in Bayou State. Dr. Mackie has involved himself in the STEM field for over three decades, acquiring bachelor of science degrees from Morehouse College and Georgia Tech, where he also acquired a master of science and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. Dr. Mackie’s next steps would land him at Tulane University, where he would make history serving as the only African American to receive tenure status as a professor in 2002. Unfortunately, following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Tulane made the difficult decision to discontinue its engineering program…”

The Trump administration countered Chinese investment in African tech. Will Biden continue?

“In January 2020, Nigerian healthcare startup LifeBank became the first company to receive investment under a new maternal care initiative introduced by the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). LifeBank’s 24/7 blood supply business met three criteria for a DFC-funded company; it is a revenue-generating enterprise filling a developmental gap in an emerging market. Using these investment criteria, the DFC has gone on to invest in multiple sectors across Africa. In addition to LifeBank, DFC’s Africa portfolio includes Twiga FoodsCopia (both Kenyan startups), and investments in Angola, Botswana, Chad, Egypt, Gabon, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda. The DFC has a $75 billion investment target for people in less developed economies, through loans and direct equity funding into startups, funding VC funds, and providing technical support.  That alone makes its presence in Africa remarkable. Startups working on power generation, healthcare, agriculture, technology, and financial services could access really large tickets for massive scale. But America is changing hands to an ideologically different leadership. How will this influence the DFC’s future approach and impact in Africa?”
