The Eightfold Path is an anthology of interconnected Afrofuturistic parables inspired by the teachings of the Buddha. It traverses media, stories, cultures, and ideas. Johnson and coauthor Steven Barnes are both practicing Buddhists and have incorporated their beliefs into this series of Buddhist stories that intersect with science fiction and Afrofuturism…”

Beyond the Black Panther: Visions of Afrofuturism in American Comics

(Article posted on museum.msu.edu. Photo credit: MSU Museum)

“Most people are familiar with Marvel’s Black Panther, and some are aware of its connections to Afrofuturism, a framework to understand how the black imagination manifests visions of freedom. This virtual exhibition will explore how themes such as aesthetics, Black feminism, and community, common to Afrofuturism, shape contemporary Black comics. Beyond the Black Panther gives us a view of stories inspired by African folklore such as Is’nana the Were-Spider, science fiction adventures centered on a black female hero such as Matty’s Rocket, or vital social commentary about police violence such as I am Alfonso Jones…”

Lagos 2050: Shanty megastructures?

Improvised shanty-megastructures” drawn by Nigerian architect Olalekan Jeyifous.

“The sci-fi world has started to take notice of Lagos. The Nigerian city even had a starring role in the newest Captain America movie, sparking the tongue-in-cheek trending hashtag #CaptainAmericaInNigeria. Brooklyn-based Nigerian artist Olalekan Jeyifous has his own futuristic twist on the city. In a series dubbed Shanty Megastructures, he’s recreated a Lagos in 2050 where massive tin shacks tower over the city’s luxury real estate areas. Jeyifous used a series of digital software to create his 3D visuals which he then later rendered into digital photographs. He says it’s to represent the country’s marginalized poor.”

The most gorgeous face mask of the year celebrates African design

“Nigeria-based architectural designer Tosin Oshinowo and U.K.-based textile designer Chrissa Amuah have created three gorgeous face masks, called Freedom to Move, commissioned by Lexus, which is an official automotive partner of the annual Design Miami show. The brief asked them to create a “design object of our times,” and what’s more fitting than a mask for 2020?”

Wolcott, Professor of History at the University of Buffalo and was presented by the UB Humanities Institute in conjunction with Humanities New York (Buffalo Humanities Festival: Utopia digital programming for 2020-2021). The Future of Freedom in Africa

“Despite Ebola, Africa is rising. Since the 1990s, Africa has witnessed a change in its fortunes: the Cold War ended, apartheid was repealed, Marxism came to naught, and many cruel dictators lost their support. Africa is experiencing increased political and economic development, which is empowering African citizens to move out of poverty, develop their human capital, and continue development. While Africa’s growth is impressive, it is fragile and must be considered with cautious optimism.”

Is Africa ready for a digital future?

“WHAT does digital connectivity mean for Africa’s industrial and economic development? Rockwell Automation Sub-Saharan Africa managing director, Barry Elliott, considers the possible impact of the ‘Internet of things in Africa’. Will automation, artificial intelligence and robotics – or as it’s been called, the ‘rise of the machines’ – really reduce the value of people and their roles as meaningful contributors to society?”

A Guide to Sun Ra on Film

“You could devote your entire life to exploring Sun Ra’s galaxy of music, art, and writing and never reach an end. During his 79 years on this particular planet, the interstellar bandleader was a perpetual motion machine of creativity, releasing countless records, touring constantly, and penning works of Afrofuturist poetry and philosophy. Ra’s universe is still expanding, more than a quarter-century after he left this earthly plane; there’s a seemingly never-ending flow of releases and rediscoveries, and the Sun Ra Arkestra, still an ongoing concern under the direction of saxophonist Marshall Allen, will release its first album since 1999 this month.”
