From Here to Wakanda: Envisioning Ourselves Into the Future
According to writer Jamie Broadnax, “Afrofuturism is the re-imagining of a future… seen through a Black lens.”
In this virtual gathering, my guests Shawn Johnson and Donald Gerard and I will facilitate discussions focused on getting to know each other as we individually and collectively re-imagine ourselves, our communities, and our planet through a Black lens. Please join us as we share ideas, tap into our collective hearts and minds, and have fun as we brainstorm a future in which we continue to thrive against all odds.

We are humans gathering online to discuss ways to promote deep visioning in service of healing generational trauma and imagining newer, healthy, and more sustainable ways of thriving in community. This online discussion will focus on brainstorming ways to both heal ourselves together and open the door to our individual and collective creativity as we intuit, imagine, and manifest both ancient and new systems, institutions, tools, and networks that support our individual and collective well-being.

“The Innovation Hub – the Innovation Agency of the Gauteng Province will host the prestigious 2019 International Association of Science Parks (IASP) Africa Division Workshop, May 23 – 24, 2019, at The Innovation Hub, Tshwane, South Africa… To be hosted under the theme ‘The Role of Science and Technology Parks (STPs) and Areas of Innovation (AOIs) as enablers for economic development’, the main objective of the workshop will be to challenge practitioners from the continent to consider the economic development capacity of STPs and AoIs in Africa.”
It’s great that the economic development capacity of STPs and AOIs are being considered in African countries, and I’m certain many Africans will benefit economically from these types of efforts. Keep in mind, however, that as great as this appears, “economic development” has always been code for exploitation – in this case, Black genius being harvested by non-Black-owned tech companies that ultimately profit enormously from the innovations the centers produce. How can we create and support our own technology parks?
